Before basketball took over the Philippines, football was the nation’s sport—and one of its key pioneers was Joaquín Loyzaga.
Loyzaga was a player, coach, and football official who helped shape the sport in the early 20th century. He played a vital role in the development of the Philippine national football team, leading them at a time when we could compete with the best in Asia. More than that, he worked to grow the sport at the grassroots level, making sure football had a future in the country.
But somewhere along the way, football faded, and figures like Loyzaga were forgotten. His contributions laid the groundwork for what could have been a footballing nation—yet today, few even know his name.
At Manila Montet FC, we believe it’s time to bring football back. The Philippines has a deep footballing history—we just need to reconnect with it.
